Area Improvement Plan for the Shopping Areas of Mongkok

Maunsell – EDAW Joint Venture were appointed by the Planning Department for the Feasibility Study of Area Improvement Plan for the Shopping Areas of Mongkok. This is the first win with EDAW following the merger in December 2005.

Mongkok is one of the Hong Kong's most densely populated districts. The busy main roads dissect the districts into several discrete sub-areas which are not well-connected with one another. The pedestrian environment is also not comfortable as pavements are often congested and adversely affected by fumes and noise from vehicular traffic close by. Nevertheless, Mongkok has emerged as one of the most popular shopping areas in Hong Kong, attracting not only the local population but also overseas tourists and tourists from Mainland China in particular. The convergence of so many people into the areas has only served to aggravate the congestion and other planning problems affecting Mongkok.
